The app displays a green number. The tax file requires a folio, a unit balance and a transaction list that will remain if the app is deleted. That list is called the Statement of Account. Searches for what is soa in mutual fund are actually a search for the official passbook.
Quick Answer Box
SOA = Statement of Account issued by the AMC or its registrar (CAMS or KFintech) for non-demat units. CAS = Consolidated, usually email, statement across folios. Available online with registered email and pan. It is sent to you monthly if you transact and half-yearly if you do not.
What Does SOA Mean in the Context of Mutual Funds?
SOA in mutual fund meaning is Statement of Account.
When you buy Indian mutual fund units and hold them with the fund house (not in a demat account), the Asset Management Company (AMC) records those units in a folio. The SOA is the statement of that folio: who has it, which scheme, how many units, at what NAV and which money moved in or out.
It is not:
- a capital-gains computation (ask for the gain statement separately)
- a tax paid challan
- the same document as a demat holding from NSDL or CDSL
- a performance certificate or a “best fund” ranking
Two holding modes exist:
- SOA / statement mode: Units remain with AMC and RTA Built-in SIP, STP and SWP. No annual fee for demat holding.
- Demat mode: Units with depository participants. The record is the CAS depository or DP. Some systematic features are more clumsy.
You can live your whole investing life in SOA mode and never open a demat account.
SOA Versus CAS
People use the words like they were twins. They’re not.
The SOA is folio specific. One fund house, one registrar, one (or few) folios.
The Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) is based on PAN. SEBI seeks CAS for aggregation of mutual-fund folios across AMCs. If you have a demat account, a wider CAS can also include those holdings too.
Non-financial edits (address, mobile) don’t create a “transaction month” in itself. Do for purchases, SIPs, switches, redemptions, STP, SWP & IDCW lines.
Table 1: Financial & Technical Data Matrix – Which Paper?
| Paper | Issued for | Job |
| Folio SOA | One AMC / folio | Official unit ledger |
| CAS (MF) | PAN across AMCs | Combined view + monthly/half-yearly mail |
| Demat CAS | DP holdings | Units in NSDL/CDSL |
| Capital-gain statement | Financial year | Tax working, not the live balance |
| Account statement on the app | Distributor view | Convenient, not the last word |
What Information Is Included in a Mutual Fund SOA?
Labels change by registrar. The blocks do not.
Identity
Name of holder or holders PAN of first holder KYC flag folio number mode of holding (single joint anyone or survivor) tax status registered email and mobile.
Scheme
Scheme name, Plan (Direct/ Regular), Option (Growth/ IDCW), Balance of units, Valuation NAV and date, Value now
Transactions
Date, type (purchase, SIP, switch-in, switch-out, redemption, STP, SWP, IDCW payout, IDCW reinvestment), amount, NAV, units, stamp duty wherever applicable.
Bank and payout
Registered bank for redemptions and IDCW.
Nominee
Nominee name and allocation as provided in the folio. That is “nominee SOA”: the nominee as shown on the statement, not a separate product.
TER (total expense ratio) is a fee of the scheme. “Many SOAs don’t reprint the live TER on every page. Check TER on the factsheet or AMFI What matters is the cost fork, Direct or Regular, and the SOA will still tell you which one you sit in.
How to Get the SOA for Mutual Fund Investments Online
Folio SOA from the AMC
Log in on the AMC site or app with folio or PAN, open statements, download PDF.
Mail-back CAS from the registrar
- Open the CAMS or KFintech CAS / mail-back page.
- Choose Detailed if you need every SIP line (Summary is balances only).
- Enter the email registered in the folio and PAN.
- Set a PDF password.
- Submit. The password-protected file arrives on that email, often within minutes to a few hours.
If email is not registered on every folio, the consolidation will look thin. Update email with each AMC or via MF Central first.
MF Central
For many AMCs, MF Central is the industry front door for servicing folios. There are holdings, nomination and some statements after PAN and OTP.
Distributor apps (Groww, Coin, Kuvera)
Dashboards that are useful. Keep the registrar or AMC PDF for disputes, loan against units, gearbox and tax.
How Often Do Mutual Fund Companies Send SOA to Investors?
Under the CAS rules investors actually feel:
- Monthly email CAS when there is a financial transaction in that month
- Half-yearly (after March and September) when the folio is quiet
You can have an on-demand statement every day of the week. “The AMC never sent me anything” usually means the folio has an old office ID as an email ID, or the CAS has landed in spam from a CAMS or KFintech sender.
Physical Mail Investors Can Still Receive Paper Statements. The overwhelming majority of new folios are email-first.

What is AMC in mutual fund?
Asset Management Company: The SEBI registered company that manages the schemes (SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC AMC etc.) The trustee and the custodian are separate legal entities. The SOA is issued for units of those AMC schemes.
What is AMC SIP in mutual fund?
A SIP that runs on the AMC’s own website/app, as opposed to a SIP that sits on a distributor platform. The units still land in a folio SOA. The debit mandate is with the AMC or the payment partner. It’s not a different asset class.
What is TER in mutual fund?
Total Expense Ratio The annualised cost charged to NAV covering management, registrar, distribution (in Regular plans) and other permissible expenses. Direct plans have lower TER than the Regular plans under the same scheme. TER is disclosed on the SOA, not negotiable.
What is FoF in mutual fund?
Fund of Funds: An investment scheme that invests in other mutual fund schemes (sometimes overseas funds) You will still get a SOA for the FoF folio. You do not get a separate SOA for each underlying scheme.
What is IDCW option in mutual fund?
Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal : the option which can distribute surplus. It replaced the old “dividend” tag as the distribution can include equalisation and is not solely a gift of profits. IDCW is usually taxable in the hands of the investor when paid out. Growth option does not pay that line; value remains in NAV.
What is perpetual SIP in mutual fund?
A SIP registered without an end date, or at a far date the platform thinks is open. It runs until you cancel it or the mandate fails. It’s not a promise of perpetual returns. Each instalment will be shown as it comes into the SOA.
What is nominee SOA in mutual fund?
The printed field on the statement for nominee Sign up or modify on MF Central or AMC. Units are transmitted to the nominee on the holder’s death, but legal heirs can claim the units. Not a will, a nomination.
Is SIP Better than Mutual Fund?
The question conflates a technique with a product.
Scheme is a Mutual Fund. A SIP is one way of buying that scheme. Another schedule is a lump sum. You can’t replace “mutual fund” with “SIP” any more than you can replace a house with an EMI.
SIP is often better behaviour; it spreads out buying dates. Not automatically higher returns. If both are used, the SOA will show both SIP lines and lump-sum lines in the same folio.
Risk Analysis: Eleven SOA Mistakes
- Trusting only the app and never opening a CAS PDF.
- Using an unregistered email for mail-back and getting a blank CAS.
- Confusing SOA mode with demat mode when filling a loan or transmission form.
- Reading IDCW as tax-free dividend.
- Assuming TER is printed as a live number on every SOA.
- Thinking a nominee on the SOA replaces a will.
- Stopping a SIP in the app and not checking the last SOA debit.
- Mixing two PANs in one household and wondering why CAS is short.
- Treating FoF as if you held each underlying scheme.
- Asking “is SIP better than mutual fund” as if they were rivals.
- Using a capital-gains statement as proof of current units.
Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix
| Decision Point | Generic Advice | Strategic Thinking |
| App shows units | “I have a record” | Download CAS PDF |
| Mail-back empty | “AMC lost my money” | Email not in folio |
| IDCW credited | “Bonus income” | Taxable payout |
| Perpetual SIP | “Forever compounding” | Cancel when the goal ends |
| Nominee filled | “Estate done” | Still write a will |
| Regular plan SOA | “Same as Direct” | TER fork |
Closing Perspective
The folio passbook is a SOA. CAS is the combination of letters that SEBI wants you to get. AMC, TER, FoF, IDCW and perpetual SIP are not competition products but labels on or around that passbook. Download the detailed statement with the actual email on the folio Convenience with the app. Use the PDF if you need an official copy.
This is generic information, and not a recommended scheme. Investments in mutual funds are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
