A contract is not a share. The question: What is futures and options trading is a bet on price, size and time, settled through a clearing corporation.
Quick Answer Box
Readiness A future for both sides An option confers a right to the buyer and an obligation to the seller. Futures require margin. Option buyers are paying up. Margin is posted by option sellers. It trades in lots India on NSE and BSE. It is used. Most people miss out.
What the Words Mean
Futures and options trading in one line: Standard contracts on an index or a stock, expiry date, cleared by NSE Clearing or BSE equivalent.
A futures contract is an agreement to buy a quantity at a fixed price at a future date. Buy Nifty futures, and if the index rises, you make money. If it falls you lose. About one for one with the futures price. You can leave before the expiry. If you hold to expiry, index futures settle in cash . You don’t “own the nifty”.
An option is a right.
- A call is the right to buy at the strike.
- A put is the right to sell at the strike.
- The buyer pays a premium. The most the buyer can lose is that premium.
- The seller (writer) keeps the premium and must perform if the buyer exercises or if the option finishes in the money under the exchange rules. The seller’s loss can be large. The seller posts margin.
What is futures and options trading with example?
Nifty at 24,500. Lot size 65 (the January 2026 series figure; NSE revises lots, so read the live contract).
- Buy nifty futures. One. Notional about 24,500 × 65. Not the full notional, after margin. A 100-point move is around Rs 6,500. A loss is a loss of 100 points.
- Buy 24,500 call at premium ₹150. Price is 150 X 65. If the Nifty closes below 24,500 at expiry, then the call may expire worthless and the premium is lost. If Nifty closes well above, call has value.
- Sell that call and you get the premium and margin. A sudden spike means your loss.
None of these is a prescription. They indicate the shape of the payoff.
How It Works in India
What is futures and options trading in the Indian stock market?
- Underlyings are indices (Nifty, Bank Nifty and other NSE lists) and stocks that meet SEBI’s derivative criteria.
- Contracts have fixed lot sizes. Futures and options on the same underlying share the lot.
- Expiry is weekly/monthly as permitted by the exchange calendar. SEBI has tightened weekly index-option design and raised minimum contract value for index derivatives into a ₹15-20 lakh notional band when lots are reset.
- To place an order, you need to have a trading and demat account, activation of F&O segment and margin or premium blocked by the broker.
- The broker collects full SPAN plus exposure margin up front with peak-margin rules. This is not informal intraday leverage.
- On expiry day, short options can incur additional extreme-loss margin.
- Stock derivatives that are held in the money to expiry can be settled physically. You may have to take or give delivery of shares.
How futures and options trading work on popular Indian trading platforms?
The app shows the contract, the bid-ask, the margin or premium, and a square-off button. Orders go to the exchange. Positions are marked to market. A margin shortfall can trigger a square-off. The platform does not pick the strike.
Brokers
Which online brokers offer futures and options trading services in India?
SEBI registered brokers who have enabled the F&O segment Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities and many more. The list is a pipeline. No rank, no reason to trade. Compare brokerage. Margin reporting. Does the app block the order without full margin? A low brokerage does not reduce the loss on a wrong future.
Difference, in a Table
Explain the difference between futures and options contracts with examples. The table is the difference. The Nifty numbers above are the example.
Table 1: Financial & Technical Data Matrix – Future versus Option
| Point | Future | Option buyer | Option seller |
| Duty | Obligation | Right only | Obligation if exercised |
| Upfront | Margin | Premium | Margin |
| Payoff | Linear | Limited loss, open gain | Premium kept, open loss |
| Time decay | No premium decay | Hurts long options | Helps short options |
| India lot | Same lot as the option | Same lot as the future | Same |
Risk Analysis: Eleven F&O Errors
- Calling an option “safe” because the premium is small.
- Selling options for the premium without margin for a gap.
- Holding stock F&O into expiry and facing delivery.
- Using last year’s lot size.
- Treating weekly expiry as income.
- Ignoring SPAN plus exposure.
- Averaging a losing future because “it will come back.”
- Confusing notional with cash required.
- Trading because a broker advertises F&O.
- Assuming index cash settlement applies to every stock contract.
- NRIs activating F&O without checking FEMA and broker rules.
SEBI’s own studies have repeatedly shown that most individual traders in this segment lose money. That’s the base rate. Make loss faster leverage.
Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix
| Decision Point | Generic Advice | Strategic Thinking |
| Option vs future | “Option is cheaper” | Premium vs margin, right vs duty |
| Platform | “Best app” | Full margin, live lot |
| Expiry | “Always hold” | Cash vs physical |
| Size | “One lot is small” | Notional is the risk |
| Edge | “Everyone does it” | Most individuals lose |
Strategic thinking sizes the notional before it looks at the premium.
Closing Perspective
Futures and options are contracts on the exchange. Futures tie both sides up. Options bind the seller and release the buyer after premium . India does this in spades, with upfront margin, under SEBI rules that have made contracts bigger and expiry tougher. The segment offered by brokers. They don’t give safety.
This is general information, it is not a trade.
