Tax Collected at Source Limit: LRS, Cars & Credit

Hero Image: Tax Collected at Source Limit LRS, Cars & Credit

TDS is deducted by the payer. The TCS is collected by the recipient. The collector will write a line on the invoice or the outward-remittance advice and deposit it against your PAN. That line is the tax collected at source limit story: when the statute says to the collector, “Start”, and at what rate.

TCS moves to Section 394 (old 206C) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from April 2026. The rows still get rewritten by Finance Acts.

Quick Answer Box

TCS is prepaid tax, generally refundable as credit. LRS: watch the ₹10 lakh annual band, then rate-based purposes. Cars: Rs 10 lakh per car. TCS (old 1H) is gone. TCS items are not bank deposits. Check 26AS and AIS, not only the banner on the banking app.

What Is Tax Collected at Source?

TCS is an aggregation at the receipt end of the transactions above. The dealer or authorised dealer bank or tour operator or licensed seller of specified goods is the collector of tax. He collects the tax from the buyer and pays it to the Government.

It is not:

  • a customs duty
  • the LRS dollar cap itself (that cap is still USD 250,000)
  • TDS on your FD interest
  • a fine for remitting abroad

How it works in one pass:

  1. Listing of a transaction.
  2. If the threshold and payer tests are passed, the collector applies the rate.
  3. You give the amount + TCS (or the collector takes it out from the amount you gave)
  4. The collector deposits the tax (usually by the 7th of the following month) and files the TCS statement.
  5. This amount is reflected in your Form 26AS / AIS.
  6. You claim it in ITR as tax paid already.

Is Tax Collected at Source Refundable?

Yes, in the normal case. TCS is a tax credit against your income tax liability. If the credit exceeds the tax due, the return may be a refund.

It is not reimbursed at the bank counter the next day. It is waiting for the assessment year filing. If the collector used the wrong PAN, the credit will never arrive and you will chase a correction not a “TCS product refund.”

Even if the PAN is missing, higher rates still generate credit if tax was actually paid against you.

Tax Collected at Source Rules and Turnover Limit

In older articles, “turnover limit” almost always meant Section 206C(1H): sellers of prior-year turnover over ₹10 crore paid 0.1 percent once receipts from a single buyer exceeded ₹50 lakh.

That clause was repealed from 1 April 2025 . In FY 2026-27, it will not be collected as a 2021 SOP is still in the drawer. Buyer side TDS on purchase of goods (old 194Q / Section 393) is the surviving cousin where it still applies.

No other TCS rows ever utilised that ₹10 crore seller test. Motor cars, scrap, spirits, LRS and tour packages have their own triggers.

Current Limits You Will Actually Meet

Confirm the live table with the authorised dealer. This is the FY 2026-27 pattern used by banks and rate charts:

LRS outward remittance (resident individuals)

  • Aggregate threshold commonly ₹10 lakh per financial year.
  • Education funded by a specified loan: generally nil.
  • Self-funded education / medical: 2 percent on the excess above ₹10 lakh (some older pages still print 5 percent; April 2026 bank notices moved several of those rows to 2 percent).
  • Other LRS purposes (gifts, overseas investment, maintenance): 20 percent on the excess above ₹10 lakh.
  • Overseas tour programme packages: TCS often applies from the first rupee at a flat rate (bank circulars for April 2026 cite 2 percent).

The LRS quantity cap (USD 250,000) is separate. TCS is the rupee add-on.

Motor vehicle

For the above 10 lakh per vehicle, 1 per cent, usually on the full consideration once the line is crossed and not only on the excess.

Specified luxury goods

A defined list above ₹10 lakh may carry 1 percent. Read the invoice nature code.

Traditional 206C goods

Liquor, scrap, minerals, timber, tendu, parking/toll/mining rights: rates from the first rupee, no LRS-style ₹10 lakh holiday.

International credit cards abroad

Overseas ICC spend has been left outside LRS for TCS until further notice, ministry language. Debit cards and other LRS rails are not the same sentence.

What Is the Current TCS Limit for Bank Deposits in India?

There is no TCS limit on putting money into a bank deposit.

People search this after mixing three different rules:

  • TDS on Interest (Old 194A): Bank will deduct TDS on Interest when the interest exceeds the annual limit. This is TDS and not TCS.
  • Cash withdrawal (old 194N): withholding on large cash exiting the account. Again TDS shaped, not TCS on deposit.
  • LRS TCS: applies to a resident repatriating money out under LRS, and some resident to NRO transfers that the bank considers to be LRS. The event is not the deposit itself.

If your passbook shows a TCS line, read the narrative. It is almost always an outward remittance, a tour package or a vehicle booking routed through that bank, not the FD booking.

How Does Tax Collected at Source Work on a Remittance?

You instruct an outward LRS wire of ₹15 lakh for a gift.

  • First ₹10 lakh: no TCS on the “other purposes” row.
  • Next ₹5 lakh: 20 percent TCS = ₹1 lakh.
  • Bank debits about ₹16 lakh (principal plus TCS) or asks you to fund the tax separately.
  • Collector files the quarterly TCS return.
  • You claim ₹1 lakh in the ITR.

Purpose codes matter. Labelling an investment remittance as “education” to grab the 2 percent row is a false declaration.

How Can I Check TCS Limits on My Investment Platform?

Brokers and MF apps rarely compute LRS TCS. That tax sits at the authorised dealer bank that releases the foreign exchange.

What platforms do show:

  • Capital-gains statements (not TCS)
  • Sometimes a foreign-stock funding rail that already embedded TCS when rupees left India

Check:

  1. Bank LRS / forex advice
  2. Form 26AS Part for TCS
  3. AIS information code for remittance / TCS
  4. Tour-operator or dealer invoice

If the platform only lists NAV and units, it will not warn you at ₹10 lakh of LRS.

Which Services Track TCS, and Can the Banking App Notify Me?

Tracking

  • Income-tax portal: 26AS and AIS
  • Net-banking of listed banks: 26AS download
  • CA software that imports Form 16 / 26AS
  • Some private-bank wealth apps show year-to-date LRS used and TCS collected

Notifications

A few banks now flash “LRS utilised” when you book forex. Many still do not. Do not wait for a push notification. Keep a simple year-to-date sheet of purpose-wise remittances from 1 April.

Missing TCS in AIS usually means the collector has not filed or used the wrong PAN. Raise collector correction, then AIS feedback. Do not skip the credit in the ITR hoping the department will guess.

Risk Analysis: Eleven TCS Limit Errors

  1. Calling TCS a non-refundable “penalty.”
  2. Looking for a TCS limit on FD deposits.
  3. Still collecting 206C(1H) in 2026.
  4. Treating USD 250,000 and ₹10 lakh as the same cap.
  5. Using the education rate for a brokerage fund.
  6. Assuming ICC overseas spend equals debit-card LRS.
  7. Forgetting tour-package TCS has no ₹10 lakh holiday.
  8. Booking a ₹12 lakh car and expecting TCS only on ₹2 lakh.
  9. Filing the ITR before 26AS shows the bank’s collection.
  10. Mixing TDS on interest with TCS on remittance.
  11. Resident-to-NRO transfer that the AD treats as LRS.

Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix

Decision PointGeneric AdviceStrategic Thinking
Bank added 20%“Hidden fee”Purpose row + ₹10 lakh clock
Depositing ₹20 lakh FD“TCS will apply”Interest TDS, not TCS
Sold goods ₹60 lakh“Collect 0.1%”1H omitted; check 194Q
Education remittance“Always 20%”Loan-funded often nil
App silent“No TCS this year”Open 26AS
Tour package ₹2 lakh“Under 10 lakh, skip”Package row may start at rupee one

Closing Perspective

The tax collected at source limit is not a single number but rather a set of tripwires. For most families live wire is LRS above ₹10 lakh and car above ₹10 lakh. Wrong search deposits. Credit is the correct path for recovery. Read the bank advice, match the 26AS and file the prepaid tax in the return.

This is generic information. All rates and purpose codes are subject to change. Please refer to the authorised dealer circular for the value date of your remittance.
