Banks make on loans that pay. If payment stops for long enough the asset is no longer treated as standard. This is what non performing asset means in the RBI book. A credit that has crossed the overdue clock and needs to be recognised, provisioned and reported.
It’s a classification. It’s not a criminal designation. It still affects your bureau file and the bank’s capital.
Quick Answer Box
NPA = loan past due as per the RBI clock, which is generally more than 90 days for term loans. The warning track is SMA. GNPA is pre-provision, NNPA is post-provision. Check lender letter, EMI app and credit report. One late EMI does not equal NPA.
What Does Non Performing Asset Mean in Banking?
RBI’s income-recognition and asset-classification directions (IRACP, consolidated in 2025–26 master directions for commercial banks) tell a bank when to stop treating a loan as performing.
A financial asset is an NPA if, among other tests:
- Interest and/or principal on a term loan remains overdue for more than 90 days.
- An overdraft or cash credit is out of order.
- Bills purchased or discounted stay overdue more than 90 days.
- A credit-card minimum amount due is not paid in full within 90 days of the statement due date.
- Short-duration farm loans stay overdue for two crop seasons; long-duration farm loans for one crop season.
- Specified securitisation or credit-enhancement dues stay unpaid 90 days.
- Interest or instalment on certain debt instruments stays unpaid more than 90 days.
Out of order (CC/OD) means any of these; outstanding exceeds the sanctioned limit or drawing power for 90 days; or there are no credits for 90 days; or credits do not cover interest debited in the last 90 days. Old stock statements that keep drawing power for 90 days can also trigger NPA.
Classification runs at calendar date end of day. If the due date is 31 March and the instalment has not been received before the close of business on that day, then 31 March is day one overdue.
Income on an NPA is generally recognised only when received (cash basis), not when accrued.
Non Performing Assets Definition RBI: SMA Comes First
Before NPA the account is a Special Mention Account.
| Tag | Typical overdue (term loans) |
| SMA-0 | Up to 30 days |
| SMA-1 | More than 30 and up to 60 days |
| SMA-2 | More than 60 and up to 90 days |
| NPA | More than 90 days |
Revolving lines use the excess-over-limit clock for SMA-1 and SMA-2.
SMA is the window to talk, restructure where eligible, or pay. Day 91 is late for a casual conversation.
Once NPA, the asset walks a provisioning path:
- Sub-standard: NPA for up to 12 months (period as in the live direction)
- Doubtful: after that, with ageing buckets
- Loss: identified as uncollectible, still on books until written off
Write-off is accounting. The bank can still pursue the borrower.
Gross Non Performing Assets Meaning
GNPA (gross NPA) = rupee stock of loans classified NPA, before subtracting provisions.
GNPA ratio = GNPA ÷ gross advances.
NNPA (net NPA) = GNPA minus provisions (and specified write-offs as the disclosure defines).
NNPA ratio = NNPA ÷ net advances.
If a bank has been aggressively provided, it can have a moderate GNPA and thin NNPA. Compare both, and the provision coverage ratio as well.
The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) June 2026 Financial Stability Report put the gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio of scheduled commercial banks at around 1.8 per cent in March 2026, a multi-decade low. Agriculture continued to have the highest sector GNPA (around 5.1 percent) and a large share in the stock.
Non Performing Assets Examples
- Home-loan EMI unpaid through day 91: term-loan NPA.
- Factory CC stuck above limit for 90 days with no reducing credits: out-of-order NPA.
- Card statement due 5 June, minimum due unpaid through 3 September: card NPA.
- Kharif crop loan unpaid across two kharif seasons: agri NPA even if 90 calendar days have not been the test.
- Three facilities from one bank; only the CC is out of order: borrower-wise treatment can pull the term loan into NPA at that bank.
Examples not yet NPA: one EMI five days late (SMA-0 territory); a bounce funded the next morning before day-end on a later bucket.
How to Check if a Loan Is Classified as a Non Performing Asset
- Review the loan account statement and the SMA / default notice. 3. SMA, NPA: Banks to issue consumer education notes.
- Open the lender app . Past due. Many now in days.
- Get your CIBIL / Experian / Equifax / CRIF Report. NPA and write off flags are heavier than 30 day delinquency.
- Lenders report large borrowers to CRILC. That’s for the institution, but your banker will know the tag.
- Write to branch and ask for the asset classification. NPA is different from “overdue”.
The shift from NPA to standard normally entails clearing the entire arrears of interest and principal and not just a single catch-up EMI. Check the live IRACP upgrade rule for that product.
Which Banks Have the Highest Non Performing Assets in India?
There is no standing leaderboard.
System quality in 2026 was very clean historic. IndusInd Bank and Bandhan Bank had printed GNPA above 3 percent among listed banks, while several peers sat under 1 percent GNPA and almost no listed bank printed NNPA of 1 percent, an August 2026 market note had pointed out. These are quarter snapshots. They move.
Don’t choose a savings account from a year-old “highest NPA” list. Please read the latest quarterly disclosure and RBI FSR. A low system average can mask sector stress (agriculture, a pocket of unsecured retail, a single private book).
What Services Help Manage NPAs for Businesses?
- The bank’s stressed-asset / SAMG unit: restructuring under the live MSME or resolution framework if you still have a business.
- One-time settlement discussions once the account is NPA.
- Asset Reconstruction Companies, including the National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL) pipeline for eligible large tickets.
- Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code for defaulting companies, which is a court-supervised resolution, not a counselling product.
- Credit counselling and a CA for cash-flow repair before SMA-2.
A “NPA removal service” that promises to wipe the bureau without paying or resolving the debt is not a service.
Software Tools for Tracking NPAs in Financial Institutions
Banks do not run NPAs on a consumer application.
They use core-banking systems, SMA day-end engines, early-warning dashboards, bureau feeds and CRILC uploads. NBFCs and small banks are being sold IRACP modules by vendors. There is no honest public ranking of “best NPA software” If you are an NBFC, ask the auditor whether the classification at the end of the day matches the directions for 2026, including the 90-day glide path that NBFCs were supposed to meet by 31 March 2026.
Table 1: Financial & Technical Data Matrix – Clock
| Status | Clock | Borrower action |
| Standard | Dues current | Stay current |
| SMA-0 | 1–30 days | Pay, talk |
| SMA-1 | 31–60 | Restructure window if eligible |
| SMA-2 | 61–90 | Last clean-up stretch |
| NPA | 91+ / out of order / crop test | Full arrears to upgrade |
Risk Analysis: Eleven NPA Errors
- Thinking NPA starts on the first bounce.
- Paying one EMI and assuming the tag lifts.
- Ignoring SMA letters.
- Treating GNPA and NNPA as the same ratio.
- Ranking banks from a 2023 chart.
- Missing borrower-wise taint across facilities.
- Using a tout to “delete NPA from CIBIL.”
- Confusing write-off with legal closure.
- Reading agri loans on a 90-day calendar only.
- Letting CC sit over limit because “interest is servicing.”
- Buying NPA-tracking software and skipping the day-end rule.
Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix
| Decision Point | Generic Advice | Strategic Thinking |
| Two EMIs late | “Already NPA” | Check SMA bucket |
| GNPA 3% bank | “Unsafe to deposit” | NNPA, PCR, mix |
| NPA on one CC | “Term loan is fine” | Borrower-wise rule |
| Settlement ad | “Wipe the record” | Bureau keeps history |
| NBFC 120-day habit | “Still performing” | 90-day norm from Mar 2026 |
Strategic thinking pays through SMA-2 and reads both GNPA and NNPA.
Closing Perspective
Non performing asset means the loan has failed the rbi overdue test and has to be called what it is. The number of household is ninety days. The warning SMA. GNPA is gross NPA; NNPA is after provisions. System books in 2026 were better than they were ten years ago. Individual accounts still leak. So before you believe in panic or miracle ad, check statement, bureau and upgrade rule.
This is general knowledge. Use lender’s IRACP note . Use a CA or banker for your facility .

WealthMunshi offers risk-analysis and financial-planning support for families and owners mapping debt stress, bureau impact and cash-flow repair.
Day 61 costs less than day 91. For borrowers in SMA-2 and owners facing a CC limit, a cash-flow and facility review can be arranged before the day-end process writes NPA.
