The tax clock begins when units leave the folio, not when the statement reflects an increase in NAV. This is why mutual funds redemption tax is a question of withdrawal: which units were withdrawn, how long they were held and which rate grid applies.
This guide talks about ELSS lock in, resident and NRI rules, calculation and where to get a capital-gain report.
Quick Answer Box
Equity funds: 20% STCG (within 12 months); 12.5% LTCG (above ₹1.25 lakh after 12 months). Debt funds bought on or after April 1, 2023: Slab rate on total gain. ELSS: cannot exit before 3 years for each instalment. Post that, equity LTCG. Only the profits are taxed. TDS is deducted at source for NRIs. Use CAMS , Fintech or your app’s tax P&L . * Rates are exclusive of surcharge and cess.
What Is the Tax on Mutual Funds Redemption in India?
Redemption is a transfer of units. The tax is on capital gain:
Capital gain=Redemption proceeds−Cost of units redeemed−allowable expenses\text{Capital gain} = \text{Redemption proceeds} – \text{Cost of units redeemed} – \text{allowable expenses}Capital gain=Redemption proceeds−Cost of units redeemed−allowable expenses
Return of principal tax-free. The classification of gain (or loss) is by type of scheme and period held.
When you switch from Scheme A to Scheme B, it’s treated as a redemption of A and a purchase of B. Tax is calculated on A.
IDCW (dividend) is a separate income event and usually taxable at slab with TDS under dividend rule when thresholds are crossed. Growth-plan compounding is taxed only when you cash out or switch.
Mutual Fund Redemption Tax Rules by Category
Equity-oriented funds (typically more than 65% in domestic equity, including most ELSS and equity index funds)
- Held 12 months or less: STCG at 20%
- Held more than 12 months: LTCG at 12.5% on the aggregate eligible gain above ₹1.25 lakh in that financial year
The ₹1.25 lakh exemption is one bucket for the year across listed equity and eligible equity funds, not per scheme.
Specified / debt-heavy funds acquired on or after 1 April 2023
- Gain is treated as short-term regardless of holding period
- Taxed at the investor’s income-tax slab
- No indexation
Older debt units acquired before 1 April 2023
- Different grandfathering: long-term treatment may still apply if the holding-period test for that vintage is met, generally at 12.5% without indexation for transfers after the July 2024 changes
- Confirm the purchase date on the statement before assuming slab-only tax
Gold, international and many hybrid / FoF structures
- Classification follows the scheme’s equity or specified-fund status and the holding-period test that applies to that class (often 24 months for long-term on non-equity listed units)
- Do not assume the 12-month equity clock
Rates above are plus surcharge and cess. The transfer date, not the original SIP start date, decides which Finance Act rate applies.
Table 1: Financial & Technical Data Matrix – Redemption Tax Snapshot
| Category | Holding for “long-term” | ST treatment | LT treatment |
| Equity-oriented MF | More than 12 months | 20% | 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh / year |
| Specified debt MF bought on/after 1 Apr 2023 | Not applicable | Slab rate | None |
| ELSS (equity) after lock-in | Always >12 months at unlock | Rare at unlock | 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh |
| NRI equity redemption | Same clocks | TDS 20% on STCG | TDS 12.5% on taxable LTCG |
| NRI specified debt | Any | TDS often 30% on gains | None under 50AA-style rules |
Verify the scheme’s SID classification before you redeem a hybrid or FoF.
Tax on Mutual Fund Redemption Long Term
“Long term” is not a catch phrase. For equity funds, it means units held for a period exceeding 12 months before the date of redemption.
SIP example:- Today you redeem. Units bought a year and a half ago, long term. Long term units purchased 8 months ago in the same folio. Registrars use FIFO: first units to go out are the oldest.
If FIFO is trashing enough old units then a partial SIP redemption can be all long-term with newer instalments still in the folio.
The exemption is aggregate and annual, for the ₹1.25 lakh LTCG. The ₹1.20 lakh of equity LTCG redeemed in March and another ₹50,000 in the same financial year, goes to the 12.5% band.
ELSS Mutual Fund Redemption Tax
ELSS is an equity-oriented tax-saver with a three-year statutory lock-in from each purchase date.
- You cannot redeem or exchange locked units, even if you pay an exit load.
- 36 months timer for each SIP installment. The later installments are not unlocked three years after the first SIP is completed.
- The holding period is more than 12 months after unlock and hence the gain is equity LTCG and not STCG.
- It is an entry benefit available under the old regime of deduction up to Rs. 1.5 lakh under section 80C. It does not eliminate exit taxes.
- In the new tax regime, 80C is generally not allowed. So ELSS becomes like a locked equity fund.
Death of the unitholder is the usual exception AMCs process. There is no emergency.
Mutual Fund Redemption Tax for NRI
NRIs redeeming Indian mutual funds are taxed under Indian capital-gains rules. The AMC deducts TDS before payout.
Typical pattern:
- Equity STCG: TDS 20% on the gain
- Equity LTCG: TDS 12.5% on taxable long-term gain (the exemption mechanics should be checked on the actual TDS working; do not assume the AMC will always leave ₹1.25 lakh untouched without documentation)
- Specified debt-style gains: TDS often 30% on the gain
TDS is not the final tax always. If return is due, excess can be claimed in ITR. DTAA relief is subject to residency documentation and the rules of the other country. For example, UAE has no domestic capital-gains tax for many individuals, but that doesn’t stop Indian TDS at source.
GIFT Cityfund products have a different prospectus. Do not confuse those rates with domestic AMC folios.
The source of subscription NRO vs NRE can affect repatriation. It doesn’t rejig the capital gains rate grid.
How Do I Calculate Capital Gains Tax on Mutual Fund Redemption?
- Download the capital-gain / tax P&L for the financial year.
- Note scheme type (equity-oriented or specified/other).
- For each redemption line: units, redeem NAV date, acquire dates, cost, proceeds.
- Split gain into ST and LT by holding period of the units actually redeemed.
- Sum equity LTCG for the year. Subtract ₹1.25 lakh if eligible. Apply 12.5% to the rest.
- Apply 20% to equity STCG.
- Add specified-fund gains to slab income.
- Add surcharge and cess.
- For NRIs, compare TDS already deducted with the computed tax.
Worked resident equity lump-sum:
- Cost ₹5,00,000, redeem ₹8,00,000 after 18 months, gain ₹3,00,000
- LTCG exemption ₹1,25,000
- Taxable ₹1,75,000 × 12.5% = ₹21,875 before cess
Same gain at 10 months: STCG ₹3,00,000 × 20% = ₹60,000 before cess.
SIP redemptions need the FIFO lot list. Do not apply one holding period to the whole folio.
Which Mutual Fund Platforms Provide Detailed Tax Reports?
Reliable sources:
- CAMS and KFintech consolidated capital-gain statements by PAN and financial year
- AMC websites and apps
- Distributor / direct platforms: Groww, Zerodha Coin, Kuvera, MF Central, bank MF portals
- CAMS/KFin email statements that list STCG, LTCG and grand-fathered lots
Use the registrar statement as the spine when an app dashboard disagrees. Report Schedule CG from that spine, not from a rounded screenshot.
Are There Mutual Fund Services That Offer Tax-Saving Redemption Options?
No service can legally erase tax on a completed gain. What exists:
- Redeem after the 12 month equity line, the lot will be LTCG
- Use ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption for LTCG. Spread equity Exit across financial years when cash-flow allows
- Capital-gains set off rules to allow for harvest losses in the same year to be set off against gains
- ELSS locked-in till maturity of each instalment; no penalty window
- If you don’t want IDCW cash, choose growth plans and wait for tax till redemption
- If the TDS is more than the actual liability, then file a return for NRIs.
“Tax-saving redemption products” that promise a clean exit from ELSS before three years or a private rate below statute are not a real option.
Risk Analysis: Eleven Redemption Tax Mistakes
- Taxing the entire redemption proceeds rather than the gain.
- Treating each SIP unit as long term as the SIP is 3 years old.
- Shared. Annual. Forgetting the ₹1.25 lakh exemption
- Equity rates for selected debt fund purchased after 1 April 2023.
- Exit-load story wants to break ELSS lock-in.
- Disregarding that a switch is a taxable redemption.
- Using an app total that does not agree with CAMS/KFin.
- Taking NRI TDS as final word without checking ITR credit.
- Taking a large LTCG in March when April would reset the exemption.
- Mixing IDCW tax with redemption capital gains.
- Ignoring surcharge & cess on headline 12.5% or 20%
Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix
| Decision Point | Generic Advice | Strategic Thinking |
| Need cash from equity SIP | “Redeem any units” | Check FIFO: which lots are already long-term |
| ELSS SIP age 3 years | “Whole folio is free” | Only instalments that completed 36 months |
| Debt fund held 5 years | “Must be LTCG” | Post-1 Apr 2023 purchases are slab-rate |
| NRI payout | “TDS is my tax” | Credit TDS; file if excess |
| App shows ₹0 tax | “I owe nothing” | Reconcile with CAMS statement and ₹1.25 lakh usage |
| Switch to another scheme | “Not a sale” | Tax on the outgoing scheme |
Strategic thinking dates every unit, not the folio nickname.
Closing Perspective
Redemption tax is a lot tax. Equity units held for over a year fall in the 12.5% band above 1.25 lakh. Newer equity units yield 20%.’’ Most debt units post 2023 pay slab tax. ELSS adds a lock-in which you cannot buy your way out of and then falls in the equity LTCG bucket. NRIs deal with TDS first and then the return. The best compliance step still remains the same: download the registrar capital-gain statement before you file.
This is general info. Check the classification and rates with the scheme SID and tax adviser for the year of transfer.
