Multi Family Office: Fees, Services & How to Choose

Hero Image: Multi Family Office Fees, Services & How to Choose

If a family has just sold a company, they do not require another relationship manager. It needs a small institution: investment policy, tax calendar, filing the will, and someone to say no to a cousin’s startup. An SFO is building that institution for one surname. Part of it is being leased by a multi family office.

This guide defines the MFO, compares it with a single-family office, sketches Indian fees and services, and sets a diligence list. It is not a ranking of ‘largest’ firms by unconfirmed AUM.

Quick Answer Box

MFO can serve more than one family from a single platform. An SFO does one. Cost is shared . Control is shared . Privacy is high but not exclusive . Indian MFO fees are typically 50-100 bps of assets plus project retainers. Minimums vary widely. Many independent MFOs initiate conversations at ₹25-50 crore of complexity and not a brochure SIP. SEBI registrations can be triggered by MFO advising outsiders registration.

What Is a Multi Family Office?

A multi family office is a service business. Unrelated families hire the same firm for some combination of:

  • Investment policy and asset allocation
  • Manager and product selection (mutual funds, PMS, AIF, direct deals)
  • Consolidated reporting across banks, brokers and entities
  • Tax, FEMA and cross-border coordination
  • Estate, trust and nomination hygiene
  • Philanthropy and next-generation education
  • Sometimes lifestyle, security and bill-pay operations

Each family keeps its own legal entities and its own investment policy. What is shared is people, software and the specialist roster.

It is not:

  • A mutual fund
  • A bank locker
  • Automatically a SEBI-registered category
  • The same as the promoter’s holding company

Virtual family offices (VFOs) are a lighter cousin: technology plus on-demand specialists, usually cheaper and thinner.

Multi Family Offices in India

First-generation liquidity events created ₹30–300 crore books that were too large for a product-led RM and too small for a ten-person SFO. This helped grow India’s MFO layer.

Providers come in three shops:

  • Independent MFOs that bill advice and implementation
  • Bank and brokerage private-wealth groups that wrap MFO language around deposits, PMS and credit
  • Accountant-led or law-led platforms strong on tax and estate, lighter on public-markets CIO work

Most of the desks are in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Now, some families can run an IFSC family investment fund or hire an FME that may offer multi-family portfolio services under IFSCA rules at GIFT City,” he said. That’s a choice of law, not a replacement for an Indian will.

The directories featuring “60 MFOs” are a mixed bag of bona fide multi-client firms, fund platforms and single-family offices. League tables should be used as a phone directory, not a beauty contest.

Largest Multi Family Offices

In India, “largest” is usually for single family pools (e.g., promoter offices behind names like Premji Invest or Catamaran) and not MFOs.

For firms serving many families, scale is number of client families and platform AUM, which few publish in a comparable way. Private banks of banks count group wealth, so they look big. Independent MFOs tend to be smaller and more transparent in terms of conflict.

Don’t pick an MFO because the slide says it’s number one. Choose it because there are investment committee minutes.

Multi Family Office Fees and Cost

There is no SEBI fee cap labelled “MFO.”

Common Indian and global patterns:

  • AUM fee: often about 0.50–1.00 percent a year on financial assets for a full desk, sometimes tiered down as the book grows
  • Retainer: ₹25 lakh to ₹75 lakh a year is a published band for mid-complexity MFO packages in some Indian fee surveys; lighter VFOs quote lower
  • Implementation extras: PMS and AIF fees sit on top of the MFO fee unless the contract says the MFO fee is offset
  • Project fees: trust setup, sale of a company, cross-border move

The fully loaded cost of an SFO is another matter: dedicated CIO, tax lead, office and systems can cost ₹1–5 crore a year (or more), which is why families typically wait till they have several hundred crore of investable wealth before hiring private staff.

Ask for a written stack: MFO fee, product TER, broking and GST. Two “1 percent” slides can hide three layers.

The MFO CIO will not sit in your living room five days a week. The SFO CIO might. That is the trade.

PMS (₹50 lakh SEBI minimum) and AIF (typically ₹1 crore) are tools an MFO may use. They are not an MFO. A family can hold PMS without governance, philanthropy or a succession file.

What Are the Top Multi Family Office Services Available in India?

“Top” here means the work that actually changes outcomes:

  1. Documented investment policy and liquidity profile.
  2. Custody and reporting with non-listed holdings
  3. Tax provisioning for PANs of HUF, company, trust and individual
  4. Estate papers reflecting nominations
  5. Conflict register (does the company earn money from the AIF it recommends?)
  6. Operating company versus investment company firewall
  7. Philanthropy and CSR that isn’t a last minute check
  8. Protocol for cyber and fraud for the digital life of family
  9. NRI / FEMA Module for Overseas Members
  10. Meeting cycle with minutes

Lifestyle concierge is optional. Fiduciary minutes are not.

Which Companies Provide Multi Family Office Solutions for HNI Families in India?

Categories, not an endorsement list:

  • Independent MFOs and multi-family wealth companies (fee based houses that publish an MFO mandate)
  • Bank private-banking and family office units of large Indian and foreign banks
  • CIO platforms broker-affiliated
  • CA & law platforms that are virtual office builders

If they are managing or advising securities for a fee, ask each for their SEBI RIA, PMS or AIF registration numbers. A boutique’s regulatory problem is an unregistered “family office consultant” who recommends stocks to a lot of families.

Best Multi Family Office Platforms for Portfolio Management in India

Families buy a reporting spine, not an app logo.

Look for:

  • Multi-custodian aggregation (demat, AIF capital accounts, bank FDs, overseas LRS folios)
  • Look-through of PMS and mutual-fund holdings
  • Audit trail for private deals
  • Permissioned access for the next generation and the CA
  • Export to the tax preparer

We see Indian wealth-tech and global family-office systems in RFPs. The test is if we can explain the unlisted valuation from last quarter, not if the dashboard is pretty.

GIFT City FMEs can offer PMS type multi-family services under IFSCA. This is helpful for IFSC books. It does not override Indian succession law.

How to Choose a Reliable Multi Family Office Advisor in India

  1. Who is the client of record: the family trust or the distributing AMC?
  2. How is the firm paid if you buy no product?
  3. Named CIO and tax lead, not a rotating RM.
  4. Sample quarterly pack with another family’s name removed.
  5. Custody at a third-party bank or depository.
  6. Written investment policy you can fire them against.
  7. SEBI / IFSCA licences that match the service.
  8. References from a family that left and a family that stayed.
  9. Cyber and confidentiality terms.
  10. Exit clause and data portability.

If the pitch deck is only past returns of an in-house PMS, you are buying a product shelf.

Starting a Multi Family Office

Two different projects:

Hiring an MFO is a services contract.

Launching an MFO is setting up a firm that will work for other families. That usually means company or LLP, compliance, technology and if you advise or manage outside money, SEBI RIA and/or PMS or an IFSCA FME. The registration picture is different for a true SFO that invests only the promoter family’s capital. Pooling cousins-plus-neighbours is not “still an SFO”

The RBI NBFC rules for family investment companies is another matter where the vehicle holds financial assets at scale. Seek advice before printing letterheads.

Risk Analysis: Eleven MFO Mistakes

  1. Calling the bank RM an MFO.
  2. Paying 1 percent plus 2 percent plus carry and calling it “one fee.”
  3. No investment policy.
  4. Reporting that ignores the operating company.
  5. SFO cost structure at MFO wealth.
  6. Starting an MFO without a licence to advise others.
  7. Letting the AIF distributor write the asset allocation.
  8. No succession file because “the children are young.”
  9. League-table shopping.
  10. Giving the MFO power of attorney without limits.
  11. Measuring the office only on last year’s equity return.

Table 2: Generic Advice vs. Strategic Thinking Matrix

Decision PointGeneric AdviceStrategic Thinking
“We need a family office”“Hire the biggest logo”Match SFO / MFO / VFO to complexity
Fee is 1 percent“That’s the cost”Add product fees and GST
In-house PMS“They are the office”Policy first, product second
Dashboard demo“Platform selected”Can it book the unlisted cap table?
Cousins want in“Still our SFO”External clients can trigger SEBI
Privacy“MFO leaks”Diligence confidentiality; do not assume SFO isolation

Strategic thinking buys a fiduciary calendar, not a brand.

Closing Perspective

A multi-family office is shared infrastructure for families that require an institution and cannot yet justify a private staff. It should write policy, aggregate truth, coordinate tax and succession, stay paid, and in a way that you do not have to buy the house product. The biggest is the wrong first filter. Conflicts, custody and minutes are accurate.

This is general information and not a solicitation of investment advice or comparison of the named products.

How can WealthMunshi help?

WealthMunshi helps with private wealth and succession planning. For families considering MFO, PMS and trust structures, the firm offers advisory services.

Shared infrastructure only works if the calendar belongs to you. Families coming out of a liquidity event can institute a governance-and-fee review prior to signing an AUM slide.
